Ganesha is the Lord of Beginnings, remover of obstacles, bringer of good luck. Frequently invoked at the beginning of a project or an undertaking, to invite an auspicious outcome.
Here he is depicted in a pose that is very unusual for him, sitting on a throne of skulls, riding out death, and rising above grief. Ganesha is printed on a spiderweb print, with the spiderweb shining through.
This Ganesha block was the first linocut I created in the early 1990s.
The block used to print the red Ganesha on top of the yellow spider web is the final stage of a multi-colour reduction linocut (where you print layers and layers of different colours on top of each whilst carving away more and more from the linoleum block.
