The fox is curled up in moonlight, content in a snail shell, with the sea in the background, waves lapping gently at the fox’s hermitage, the moon reflected in the waves. The fox is enfolded in the shell of a turban snail who, like many other snails, create opercula, little doors to close the opening of their shells against the outside world. This little fox looks utterly content, snoozing in the knowledge that she is quite safe.
People that have spotted the elusive hermit fox can never agree whether they saw a 'life-sized' fox in a vast snail shell, or a *very small* fox in an ordinary sized shell.
The hermit fox is based on a photograph I took last year of my favourite little vixen in our local museum gardens. One evening she approached me at twilight and lay down, just a few feet away from me, and furled up. She snoozed for a few minutes before waking again, yawning hugely and then moving on. I felt honoured by her trust and loved spending time with her.
