Three fox guardians, gathered at twilight, in a moment of foxish quietude and contemplation (or possibly in the exchange of fox gossip).

There are quite a few urban foxes where I live, living in dens in the gardens of suburban homes, beneath sheds, and possibly in the woods. They are anything but rare yet I find it exhilarating whenever I see one, every single time. They are fierce, untamed; they are of the wild.

Earlier this year I spent many hours at twilight with two vixens in the rambling gardens of the local museum. It’s not been an easy year, and I found their presence and company a joy and comfort.  

  This print was inspired by Julie de Graag’s woodcut print ‘Three Cats’ from 1916, a simple and stark composition. When I saw her image I immediately wanted to do a fox version of it.

There are two layers to this print; the first layer is printed in orange (ranging from a bright orange to a deeper reddish orange), with the second layer printed in black on top. Water-based ink on acid free cartridge paper, 190gsm.
